According to Marko, Verstappen is the key figure in Red Bull’s championship quest.
Helmut Marko stated that Max Verstappen is crucial for Red Bull’s return to the F1 Constructors’ Championship fight.
Marko believes that Verstappen needs two more victories this season to win the F1 Drivers’ Championship and that Red Bull must also return to the Constructors’ Championship battle. The Red Bull advisor described Lando Norris’s recent victory in Singapore as “extraordinary” and expressed doubt that the Milton Keynes-based team could defeat McLaren for the championship.
With six races remaining, Red Bull is currently 41 points behind McLaren, while Verstappen holds a 52-point advantage over Norris. Consequently, Red Bull is focused on Verstappen winning his fourth consecutive drivers’ title.
When asked whether Red Bull has given up on the Constructors’ Championship, Marko told Motorsport-Total, “With the current performance? Yes. But I’m optimistic.” He added, “If Max wins again and Sergio finishes third or fourth, things will look different. However, as I said, our main focus is on the Drivers’ Championship.”
Things are slowly improving for Red Bull after Verstappen secured a surprising second place in Singapore. It’s reported that Red Bull will introduce an update package at the United States Grand Prix that could rejuvenate their season.
Marko specified what Verstappen needs to do to become a four-time world champion. The Dutch driver will also play a key role in Red Bull’s attempts to defeat McLaren. Marko noted, “If you can manage to win the Drivers’ Championship, which I believe is only possible if Max wins at least two more races, then the Constructors’ Championship will look a bit more optimistic.”
