Ajax’s Lily Yohannes Chooses to Represent the United States Over the Netherlands
The gifted Ajax midfielder and dual-national Lily Yohannes has formally declined the chance to play for the Netherlands in favor of representing the United States in her international career.
Yohannes had previously been unsure between the United States and the Netherlands, but she has already made a spectacular debut with the U.S. Women’s National Team by scoring in her first senior appearance. Given that athletes under 21 are free to swap national teams if they have played less than four international matches, she was unsure as recently as September which country to represent. She reaffirmed her dedication to the United States on social media on Monday.
Yohannes’ Statement
In her announcement, Yohannes expressed gratitude to both the United States and Dutch Football Federations:
“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the United States and Dutch Football Federations for their unwavering support and patient guidance as I made my decision regarding my international future. Their dedication and encouragement have been invaluable.”
She continued:
“After much consideration, I have decided to commit to represent my country, the United States. The U.S. is my homeland, my birthplace, and where my extended family resides. These strong connections have driven me to honor my roots and proudly commit to U.S. soccer. I am excited and eager to continue putting in the work and earn my place on the U.S. Women’s National Team.”
