ALONSO: “WE HAVE A STRATEGY THAT WE BELIEVE WILL HELP US IN THE RACE”

Fernando Alonso believes that the low downforce of the Aston Martin car will give them an advantage in Sunday’s race.

After narrowly escaping elimination in the first part of Baku qualifying by finishing 15th, Alonso went on to finish 5th in Q2 and 8th in the final session. The Aston Martin driver said they made a big step forward after their Q1 position and will try to maintain that in Sunday’s race.

The Spanish driver said, “We went into qualifying with an open mind about how fast we could be, but we weren’t confident with the car. We can’t hide the fact that we’ve been struggling with it all weekend.”

“We saw a big change from Q1 to Q2. I was 15th in Q1, which was very concerning, but then I managed to secure 5th in Q2.”

“We made a big step in terms of performance and confidence, and we hope to maintain that in Sunday’s race.”

When asked about his expectations for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the two-time World Champion responded: “We have lower downforce than others.”

“This is a strategy that we believe can help us in the race. Last year, we also went down this route to be quick in the final sector; it helped us in both defense and attack. If there’s any restart during the race, you also have that extra speed at that moment.”

“So yes, we’ll see how it goes. It’s a disadvantage for the tires, but we believe this is the best option for the race.”
