Alvaro Morata Opens Up About Battling Depression Before Euro 2024

The forward for AC Milan and Spain, Alvaro Morata, has talked candidly about his struggle with depression in the months before Euro 2024. Morata disclosed that he had such serious mental health issues that he was afraid his playing career may end prematurely before going on to win the tournament with Spain.

After spending time at elite teams like Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, and Chelsea, the 31-year-old decided to join AC Milan in order to start over. But he wasn’t sure he would ever lace up his boots again earlier this year.

Morata’s Thoughts on His Challenges

Morata revealed the extent of his difficulties in an interview with El Partidazo de Cope, saying:

“I thought I wouldn’t be able to put my boots on and go out on the pitch again. Diego Simeone, [Atletico captain] Koke, [club president] Miguel Angel Gil, and my psychiatrist were among the many people who helped me.”

“What you see on TV or social media is often just an image, but in reality, I struggled with basic things like lacing up my boots. There were moments when I had to leave work early because I was speechless and had fuzzy vision.”

“I had no idea what was going on with me, but it was a really delicate and convoluted issue. You come to understand that your greatest love may occasionally turn into your greatest enemy. It was difficult.”
