Andy Carroll Admits He’s Losing Money Playing for Bordeaux in French
Former Liverpool and West Ham striker Andy Carroll has opened up about his experience joining Bordeaux, currently competing in the fourth tier of French football. Despite being a surprise move for the experienced forward, Carroll emphasized his desire to play football over financial gain.
Bordeaux, once a prominent team in Ligue 1, faced a severe financial crisis last month when they were declared bankrupt and placed under financial administration following a failed purchase by Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG). As a result, the club was relegated to the Championnat National 2—the fourth tier of French football—and forced to release its entire squad. Bordeaux has since been rebuilding, bringing in new players like Carroll to aid in their comeback bid.
Carroll’s Commitment Beyond Money
Speaking to RMC Sport, Carroll revealed the personal sacrifices he’s making to play for Bordeaux: “To be honest, it’s even costing me money to come and play for Bordeaux but I’m playing football and I am simply happy to be playing football. I want to be a part of this club’s history and to be frank, it wasn’t a question of money. In my career, it’s never been a question of money.”
Carroll’s comments reflect his passion for the game and willingness to support Bordeaux’s efforts to climb back up the French football pyramid, even if it means taking a financial hit. His surprising move and commitment to the club highlight a desire to revive his playing career and contribute to a team with a storied history facing a difficult period.
