Arteta Discusses “Tricky” EFL Cup Ball After Arsenal’s Loss to Newcastle

'It's tricky, they fly a lot' - Arteta on EFL Cup balls

Arsenal Manager Still Confident Despite Semi-Final First Leg Defeat

Mikel Arteta remains optimistic about Arsenal’s chances of reaching the Carabao Cup final, despite a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle in the first leg of the semi-finals. The Gunners struggled with finishing, managing only three shots on target from 23 attempts, prompting Arteta to point to the unique characteristics of the Puma-manufactured ball used in the competition.

Arteta on the EFL Cup Ball

Arteta highlighted the challenge of adapting to the ball, which differs from those used in the Premier League and Champions League.
“It’s tricky that these balls fly a lot,” Arteta said.
“The grip is very different as well, so you adapt to that.”

The Premier League ball, made by Nike, and the Champions League ball, manufactured by Adidas, have distinct designs and grips, requiring players to adjust their technique.

Arsenal’s Missed Opportunities

Despite dominating possession, Arsenal failed to capitalize on key chances.

  • Gabriel Martinelli hit the post.
  • Kai Havertz missed a close-range header.

Arteta admitted improvement is needed but remained focused on the second leg:
“It’s just half-time… I have full belief that we can go out there and do it.”

Do Arsenal’s Numbers Support Arteta’s Claim?

While Arteta emphasized the ball’s challenges, Arsenal’s previous EFL Cup performances suggest they’ve adapted well:

  • EFL Cup Stats: Arsenal have hit the target with 53% of their shots (27 of 51).
  • Premier League Stats: 52% of shots on target (102 of 197).
  • Champions League Stats: 58% of shots on target (33 of 57).

Before the Newcastle game, Arsenal had scored 11 goals in three ties, including a 5-1 win over Bolton and victories over Preston and Crystal Palace.

Looking Ahead

Arsenal will need a strong performance in the second leg to overturn the deficit and keep their Carabao Cup hopes alive. Arteta remains confident in his team’s ability to adapt and deliver:
“When I see the team play and how we handle situations, I have full belief.”
