Atletico Madrid Sanctioned Following Incident-Filled Derby
The Spanish Football Federation’s Competition Committee has announced the sanctions for Atletico Madrid following the incidents that occurred during last week’s heated Madrid derby in LaLiga.
Atletico Madrid has been handed a partial stadium closure for three matches and a €45,000 fine as a result of fan misconduct during the match against Real Madrid, played on September 29th, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
In the 64th minute of the match, objects were thrown from the stands towards Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, causing the game to be paused for approximately 20 minutes. Following an investigation, the Competition Committee decided to impose a three-match partial closure affecting 5,000 seats behind the goal where the incidents took place.
Atletico Madrid also confirmed that they are working with law enforcement to identify those responsible for throwing objects using video footage and stated that individuals identified will face lifetime bans from the stadium.
In addition to these actions, LaLiga filed a formal complaint regarding 13 hate-filled chants, including “Courtois must die,” which were heard from the Atletico stands during the match.
Spanish Government Spokesperson Pilar Alegría emphasized that they had requested “strong and severe punishment” from the Anti-Violence Committee in response to the events at the derby.
