Barcelona Fans Banned from Red Star Game After Racist Behavior
Barcelona fans won’t be allowed to attend their team’s next Champions League away game against Red Star Belgrade. UEFA handed out the punishment after some supporters showed racist behavior during Barca’s 2-1 loss to Monaco in September.
The club was fined £8,330 (€10,000/$11,163), and the fans will be banned from traveling to the Red Star match on November 6. The details of what happened haven’t been shared, but UEFA clearly wasn’t happy with the fans’ actions.
UEFA’s Official Statement
In a statement, UEFA explained that the charges are related to racism and discriminatory behavior. “The Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) decided to enforce the suspended disciplinary measure… to ban FC Barcelona from selling tickets to its away supporters for the next UEFA competition match,” read part of the announcement.
The ban also includes one more UEFA match, but that part is suspended for a one-year probation period. So, if Barca fans keep out of trouble, they won’t be banned again.
A Tough Blow for Traveling Fans
This means Barca’s loyal traveling supporters will have to sit this one out, missing a big Champions League night. The fine is another hit for the club, but the focus will be on making sure their fans behave, as UEFA will be watching closely from now on.
