Chebet Becomes the First Woman to Break the 14-Minute Barrier
Double Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet capped off an extraordinary year by shattering her own women’s 5,000m world record at the Cursa dels Nassos road race in Barcelona. The 24-year-old Kenyan completed the race in a stunning 13 minutes and 54 seconds, becoming the first woman ever to run the event in under 14 minutes.
Chebet’s achievement broke her previous world record, set exactly a year earlier in the same race, by an impressive 19 seconds.

Reflecting on her historic run, Chebet expressed her joy:
“I felt capable of running under 14 minutes and I managed to do so. Two races in Barcelona and two world records—can I ask for more?”
Chebet’s focus is now firmly on the World Championships in Tokyo next year, where she aims to win gold in both the 5,000m and 10,000m events.
