Billie Jean King to Receive Historic Congressional Gold Medal for Trailblazing Legacy

Billie Jean King, a legendary figure in both tennis and the fight for gender equality, is set to make history once again as she becomes the first individual female athlete to be awarded the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal.

U.S. Representatives Mikie Sherrill (New Jersey) and Brian Fitzpatrick (Pennsylvania) announced that their bipartisan legislation, honoring King for her lifetime of achievements, successfully passed through the House of Representatives. This groundbreaking honor follows the Senate’s unanimous approval, with only President Joe Biden’s signature left to make it official.

“By passing this bill, we’re securing Billie Jean King’s legacy as a champion not just in tennis, but for equality,” said Rep. Sherrill. King’s advocacy for women and girls has spanned beyond the tennis courts, leaving a lasting impact in classrooms and workplaces as well.

The bill was introduced on the 50th anniversary of King’s iconic victory over Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes,” a pivotal moment in sports history. King, who previously received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 from Barack Obama, will soon hold both of the nation’s highest civilian honors—a testament to her enduring influence on society.
