Billy Baron Set to Sign with Shanghai Sharks in China

Billy Baron

EuroLeague veteran Billy Baron is heading to China, where he is set to sign with the Shanghai Sharks, according to sources from BasketNews. After recovering fully from an elbow injury that limited his play last season, the 33-year-old shooter is ready to showcase his skills in top-level competition once again.

Baron, one of the standout free agents in the EuroLeague heading into the 2024-25 season, was known for his elite shooting ability. Despite playing only three games for Milan last season due to injury, Baron ranked sixth in the EuroLeague for three-pointers made off screens, hitting 40% of his attempts in the 2022-23 campaign. He was also among the top 15 in total three-pointers made, boasting a 40.3% shooting accuracy—one of only six players to achieve over 40% in that category.

A Versatile and Experienced Guard

Throughout his five-year EuroLeague career, with stints at Red Star, Zenit, and Milan, Baron averaged 10.5 points (40.2% from three), 2.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in 22 minutes per game. His shooting, off-screen movement, and ball-handling skills made him a valued player across EuroLeague teams, and he is expected to bring the same strengths to the Shanghai Sharks.

The EuroLeague Exodus to China

Baron’s move to China follows that of another experienced EuroLeague guard, Thomas Heurtel, who recently signed with the Shenzhen Leopards. As more EuroLeague talents transition to Chinese teams, the trend highlights the expanding opportunities and influence of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) on international talent.

Baron’s upcoming stint with the Shanghai Sharks will allow him to reestablish himself on the court and compete at a high level after overcoming last season’s setbacks.
