Calls Grow for Drug Testing Premier League Referees Amid David Coote Controversy
Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett has called for drug testing to be introduced for match officials following the ongoing scandal involving referee David Coote.
Coote is currently under investigation by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after videos surfaced of him allegedly making derogatory remarks about Liverpool and their former manager Jürgen Klopp, as well as footage purportedly showing him snorting a white substance during Euro 2024.
Hackett Pushes for Stricter Regulations
Hackett has long advocated for stricter oversight of referees, emphasizing the need for anti-doping measures to maintain the integrity of the profession. “This incident highlights a glaring oversight in the refereeing profession. Introducing drug testing is a necessary step to ensure transparency and credibility,” Hackett stated.
