Carlos Alcaraz faced a stunning upset in the second round of the US Open on Thursday, losing to Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets. The 74th-ranked van de Zandschulp triumphed over the 21-year-old Spaniard with a 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 victory at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Alcaraz, currently ranked No. 3 in the world, has enjoyed recent success with an Olympic silver medal and a Wimbledon title, but he struggled from the start in this match and couldn’t find his rhythm, committing 27 unforced errors.
Van de Zandschulp secured the biggest win of his career with an ace, marking his first-ever victory over a top-10 opponent at a major tournament.
