Chelsea maintained their eight-point lead at the top of the Women’s Super League with a hard-fought victory over Brighton at Kingsmeadow.
The Blues took control early with two goals in quick succession from Sjoeke Nusken and Aggie Beever-Jones, putting Chelsea 2-0 ahead. However, Brighton responded before half-time, with Jelena Cankovic pulling one back to halve Chelsea’s lead.
Sonia Bompastor’s Chelsea side restored their two-goal advantage in the second half but were threatened by a resilient Brighton side when Kiko Seike scored Brighton’s second in the final 20 minutes. Despite the pressure, Chelsea managed to clinch victory in stoppage time, with Nusken heading home to secure all three points.
The win ensured Chelsea’s perfect start to the Women’s Super League season, extending their lead at the top. Brighton, on the other hand, slipped from third to fifth in the standings, dropping two places as they struggled to keep up with the league leaders.
