What Chelsea Can Expect from £48m Signing Jamie Gittens

Chelsea have officially completed the signing of Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund for an initial £48.5m, with the England U21 winger agreeing a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

The 20-year-old’s arrival ends manager Enzo Maresca’s search for a left winger after Jadon Sancho’s return to Manchester United and Mykhailo Mudryk’s provisional suspension.

But what can Chelsea fans expect from Gittens as the Blues continue their aggressive rebuild under Maresca?

A Direct and Dynamic Attacker

Gittens is a right-footed left winger known for:

Explosive pace and acceleration in transition.

Fearless dribbling and one-on-one ability, described by Dortmund teammate Karim Adeyemi as “one of the best I’ve ever seen.”

✅ A growing end product: 8 goals in 32 Bundesliga appearances last season.

His profile fits Chelsea’s recruitment strategy of targeting young, adaptable players with potential resale value.

Where Will Gittens Play?

At Stamford Bridge, Gittens is expected to compete directly with:

  • Noni Madueke (right wing)
  • Pedro Neto (versatile on both flanks)
  • Tyrique George (emerging academy talent)

With Nkunku, Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer, and Marc Guiu covering central roles, Gittens fills a void on the left left by Sancho’s loan ending.

Maresca will likely use him as an inverted winger, cutting inside onto his stronger foot in the Italian’s possession-based system.

A Familiar Path to Chelsea

This isn’t Gittens’ first taste of life at Chelsea. He briefly trained at the club’s academy before spells at:

  • Reading (youth)
  • Manchester City (youth)
  • Borussia Dortmund (2020-2025)

He now follows a well-trodden route to Stamford Bridge, joining ex-City products like Cole Palmer, Liam Delap, and Maresca himself.

How Can Chelsea Afford Him?

Chelsea’s strategy relies on:

  • Signing players on long-term contracts to spread costs.
  • Selling surplus talent for profit (Sancho, Sterling, and Broja are reportedly available).
  • Generating revenue through Champions League qualification and the Club World Cup.

But Uefa’s spending rules could limit Chelsea’s ability to register new players unless they balance their books before the summer window closes.

Expert Verdict

🔵 Jamie Gittens fits Chelsea’s model perfectly – young, Premier League-ready, and with resale potential. But he’ll need time to adjust to the pressure at Stamford Bridge.” – BBC Sport’s Nizaar Kinsella

⚽ Former Dortmund striker Karl-Heinz Riedle adds: “He could be the next Jadon Sancho or Jude Bellingham. Chelsea have got themselves a gem.”
