Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has defended his role in winning a crucial penalty during the Reds’ 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Anfield, insisting that he “never dives” and that referee John Brooks was correct in awarding the spot-kick. The incident came when Jones was brought down by Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, leading to a successful penalty conversion by Mohamed Salah.
Jones’ Reaction to the Penalty
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Jones stood by his actions, stating, “I never dive. I felt the contact, went down and it was a penalty.” The 23-year-old’s assertion comes as some questioned the challenge by Colwill, but Jones was confident that the referee made the right call in favor of Liverpool.
A Vital Contribution
In addition to winning the penalty, Jones found the back of the net himself, securing a pivotal goal in the Reds’ victory. He expressed his relief at getting on the scoresheet, saying, “As soon as Mo [Salah] had the ball I made the run, but it bounced so I had to have a touch, and then thankfully it went in.”
