2034 World Cup to Be Hosted by Saudi Arabia Amid Controversy

Will the 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia take place in winter? Alcohol ban and human rights concerns are in the spotlight.

As Saudi Arabia is on the verge of securing its bid to host the 2034 World Cup, discussions have emerged around whether the tournament will be held in the winter months and the potential enforcement of an alcohol ban.

The decision for Saudi Arabia to host the 2034 World Cup is expected to be confirmed during the FIFA Congress on December 11. With the country being the sole bidder and FIFA’s decision nearly final, Saudi Arabia’s role as the host seems all but certain. However, concerns over human rights violations and accusations of “sportswashing” are casting a shadow over the event.

Hammad Albarawi, one of the officials responsible for Saudi Arabia’s World Cup preparations, spoke to Sky Sports, stating that the tournament is being organized for the people of the country and aims to enhance the quality of life for Saudi citizens through sports. However, he avoided directly addressing criticisms related to the use of sports for political image-building.

Albarawi emphasized that despite Saudi Arabia’s laws prohibiting homosexuality, the country will respect FIFA’s regulations, which ban all forms of discrimination based on sexual orientation. He assured that Saudi Arabia would welcome all visitors and noted that over 100 sporting events have been held in the country in recent years, drawing over 3 million fans who had the opportunity to experience Saudi culture.

A Push for a Summer Tournament

Regarding infrastructure investments and potential worker rights violations during construction, Albarawi mentioned that over 150 social reforms have been enacted in the last eight years, many of which focus on protecting workers’ rights and providing more opportunities for women.

While winter scheduling due to climate concerns is under consideration, Albarawi stated that Saudi Arabia is also prepared to host the tournament in the traditional June-July period. He mentioned that FIFA and various leagues and federations would decide on the final dates following consultations. Albarawi reiterated that Saudi Arabia is ready to host the tournament, regardless of the time frame.

As alcohol remains banned in Saudi Arabia, the use of alcohol during the World Cup will also be prohibited. Albarawi noted that during past sporting events, 3 million fans had an excellent time without alcohol, discovering Saudi Arabia’s rich offerings in art, music, culture, and heritage. He expressed that the country will continue to provide alternative entertainment options for fans during the tournament.
