Alex Morgan Announces Retirement, Marking the End of an Era for US Soccer

A footballing superstar, a red-carpet celebrity, a global fashion cover star, an advocate for equal rights, a spokesperson for diverse groups, an inspiration to mothers, and above all, a winner—Alex Morgan’s influence has extended far beyond the pitch.

Very few sportswomen have elevated their sport at the pace and scale that Morgan has. On Thursday, she announced her retirement, signaling the end of a significant era for US Soccer.

Morgan has been one of the key figures in the second golden era of US Women’s Soccer, contributing to back-to-back World Cup victories in 2015 and 2019, as well as an Olympic gold medal. Her individual achievements are extensive, including a league title in both America and France, and the Women’s Champions League with Lyon in 2017.

Twice named US Soccer Athlete of the Year, a three-time finalist for FIFA Best Player of the Year, and included in the FIFPro World XI six times, Morgan’s career is nothing short of legendary.
