Arrest Warrant Issued for Marcus Slaughter, Real Madrid’s Two Titles in Jeopardy
A warrant has been issued for former Real Madrid player Marcus Slaughter.
According to reports from Spanish media outlet RAC1, a warrant for the arrest of the 39-year-old Slaughter has been issued. The former player, who was with Real Madrid between 2012 and 2015, is accused of document forgery to avoid the league’s local player quota ahead of the 2014-15 season. If found guilty, Real Madrid could face the annulment of their Liga Endesa and Copa del Rey titles from the 2014-15 season. In this case, the championships could be awarded to their archrival, FC Barcelona.
Under coach Pablo Laso, Real Madrid also claimed the 2014-15 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague title. However, this potential legal development would not affect that title.
The forgery investigation, which has been ongoing since 2015, revolves around accusations that Slaughter and former player Andy Panko sought to acquire Equatorial Guinean passports to circumvent foreign player restrictions during the 2014-15 season. Under the Cotonou Agreement, Equatorial Guinean citizens are treated as EU members, which allowed the team to bypass restrictions on foreign players and field Argentine Facundo Campazzo and Mexican Gustavo Ayon without exceeding the foreign player limit.
Slaughter, who last played for AEK Athens during the 2020-21 season, had a 15-year professional career. A product of San Diego State, he played in various countries across Europe, including Italy, Germany, France, Israel, and Turkey, where he represented Darüşşafaka and Bahçeşehir.
