Montoya: Lawson ‘stealing points’ from Red Bull with aggressive driving
Juan Pablo Montoya has criticised Liam Lawson’s approach in his bid to ‘grab a seat’ at one of the Red Bull teams in 2025.
Following the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo was dismissed from the team and replaced by Liam Lawson .
Lawson is looking to retain his place next season and has just three races left to impress Red Bull.
Red Bull have a vacant seat at VCARB for next season alongside Yuki Tsunoda, but it is not certain whether Sergio Perez will continue at the main team after his poor performances weakened Red Bull’s hand in the 2024 season.
Lawson, who has scored two points since the American Grand Prix, has drawn a backlash for making contact with the Mexican driver and giving Perez the middle finger during his home race.
The fight, which left both cars damaged, drew some criticism from Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko.
Lawson later held a private meeting with Red Bull team boss Christian Horner to apologise for the incident.
Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya also became one of those who criticized Lawson following this incident.
“I honestly don’t understand what Liam is trying to do. I said that in Mexico,” Montoya told W Radio Colombia.
“I understand that he wants to prove that he is better than Checo, but at the moment all Liam is doing is stealing points from Red Bull and putting the team at a disadvantage in the championship.”
“In Brazil, Checo raced very cleanly and made it easy for Liam, but Liam was aggressive again,” he said.
