Manchester United star Paul Scholes has harshly attacked the club’s transfer operations, voicing concerns about the calibre of recent additions such strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. Scholes expressed his worries about the team’s lack of objectives from its attacking choices and attacked the club for squandering what he described as a “ridiculous” sum of money without seeing the rewards on the field.
Scholes asked Hojlund and Zirkzee in an interview with SuperSport if they could supply the goals United requires:
“Particularly in advanced regions, I simply find the quality lacking. Our score has been what? Five objectives in seven games. Look, Hojlund does okay but is he going to score you twenty goals? Neither do I. Zirkzee: Whose is he? Is he a number nine or a number ten? Will he be getting you twenty goals? I don’t believe so.”
Scholes questioned whether the current attackers could provide the required level of goalscoring since the club is depending more on hope than proven skill in their attacking choices.
Recruitment Problems and Wasteful Spending
Scholes also noted the dubious recruitment of the club, citing the summer additions of Manuel Ugarte and Matthijs De Ligt, who have not always frequently appeared in the starting XI. He underlined the unexpected choice to favor Jonny Evans, 36, over more costly, younger acquisitions in recent games, notably the one against Aston Villa.
“It’s a ridiculous sum of money and some of them can’t get into the team! De Ligt, £50m; he did not participate. Instead of him, Jonny Evans has arrived at 36 years old.”
Scholes ended by calling the club’s recruiting a “mess” therefore increasing to the pressure on Erik ten Hag and the present management to produce results with a roster that has cost the club greatly in the transfer market.
