Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) claimed a late 1-0 victory against Champions League debutants Girona, thanks to a major mistake by goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga. The Girona shot-stopper allowed a low effort from Portuguese left-back Nuno Mendes to slip through his hands, gifting PSG the win in the final moments of the match.
PSG Struggles Against Resilient Girona Defense
For most of the game, PSG found it challenging to break down Girona’s solid and determined defense. Despite dominating the game with 26 shots, the French giants were unable to score from open play. Girona, competing in Europe’s top competition for the first time after finishing third in La Liga last season, put on a composed defensive performance, frustrating PSG’s forwards.
Ousmane Dembele, one of PSG’s key attackers, came close to scoring but was denied by the crossbar with a curling shot. Later, a well-timed tackle by Ladislav Krejci prevented him from scoring in another promising chance.
Paulo Gazzaniga’s Late Error Proves Costly
As the match seemed destined for a draw, PSG were handed a lifeline in the dying minutes. Nuno Mendes fired a low shot from a tight angle that should have been an easy save for Gazzaniga. However, the goalkeeper’s late howler saw the ball slip through his hands, allowing PSG to snatch the win.
Girona, supported by their vocal traveling fans, did well to contain PSG throughout the game but were unable to offer much of an attacking threat, focusing instead on defending against wave after wave of PSG attacks.
What’s Next for PSG and Girona?
PSG’s next Champions League fixture will be a tough away game against Arsenal on Tuesday, 1 October, while Girona will look to bounce back when they host Feyenoord on Wednesday, 2 October.
