Spain’s Jon Rahm made a significant move at the Spanish Open by shooting a six-under-par 65 in the third round, putting him just two shots behind the tournament leader, Angel Hidalgo. Hidalgo remains in first place with a 68 on Saturday, sitting at 13 under for the tournament.

Rahm, a three-time former champion, will join Hidalgo in the final pairing on Sunday at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. Fellow Spaniard David Puig is just a shot behind Rahm at 11 under, after an impressive 65.

Joe Dean, world number 184 from England, and Patrick Reed, the Ryder Cup player from the US, are tied at 8 under, adding to the competitive field.

Rahm was granted entry into the Spanish Open after successfully appealing fines from the DP World Tour for his participation in LIV Golf events. The 29-year-old major champion needs to compete in four DP World Tour events annually to retain his membership, crucial for his eligibility in the 2025 Ryder Cup.

Rahm has already played in the Paris Olympics, which counts as a DP World Tour event, and is set to participate in the Dunhill Links Championship and the Andalucia Masters. The DP World Tour season concludes in November.
