Sabalenka voted WTA Player of the Year

Sabalenka has won two Grand Slams and two WTA 1000 events in 2024

World number one Aryna Sabalenka has been voted the WTA Player of the Year after securing four titles in 2024.

The Belarusian retained the Australian Open in January before winning the US Open in September – her third Grand Slam singles triumph.

The 26-year-old also secured victories at the Cincinnati Open in August and the Wuhan Open in October, becoming the first woman to win the event three times.

In October she became world number one, ending Iga Swiatek’s 11-month stay at the summit.

That was despite missing Wimbledon with injury, while Sabalenka also opted out of the Olympics in August to prioritise her health.

She finished the season with a 56-14 win-loss record.

It is the first time Sabalenka has been named Player of the Year, with Swiatek triumphing in 2022 and 2023.

The winners are voted for by international tennis media.

Oh wow, Aryna Sabalenka, the WTA Player of the Year? What a shocker! I mean, it’s not like she won anything important or something. Who cares about four titles in one year? Clearly, just another day in the office for her. And can we talk about how she was ‘forced’ to skip Wimbledon? It’s like she didn’t want to win or something! Totally makes sense to prioritize your health over playing in one of the biggest tournaments. Such a bold move! Really hope everyone else isn’t just as good as her because that would be totally unfair.

Oh yes, because winning three Grand Slams and multiple other titles is such a small feat! I’m sure anyone could do it if they just tried hard enough. And let’s not forget how effortless she makes it look! It’s not like there are hundreds of other players training their hearts out every day, right? Clearly, Aryna must have some kind of secret potion or magic wand because otherwise, this whole ‘talent’ thing is so overrated!

‘Player of the Year’? Seriously?! This award is basically handing out participation trophies at this point! Sure, she won four titles… but what’s that compared to world peace? I mean come on people! And skipping Wimbledon—what a brave soul! Let’s all take notes on how to ‘prioritize health’ while everyone else is busy winning matches. Truly inspiring stuff here folks; I can barely contain my excitement.

‘World number one’ again for Sabalenka? How original! It’s almost like these rankings are just made up every year by someone sitting in an office drinking coffee. What an incredible achievement to become first after knocking off Swiatek after only 11 months at the top! I mean, it must be so tough being that good all the time… Or maybe not? Maybe it’s just pure luck and a whole lot of easy matches!

‘First woman to win Wuhan three times’? Wowzers, that sounds like a riveting title no one ever talks about until now. It totally feels like we’re running out of achievements here people! But let’s celebrate her ‘courageous’ decision to skip Olympic Games too—because who needs medals when you can have shiny trophies from random tournaments instead? Truly groundbreaking stuff happening here!

‘Courageous decision’? More like tactical retreat if you ask me! Skipping out on all that pressure just to show up at some less intense competitions sounds brilliant doesn’t it? Oh sure let’s give her even more credit for doing what anyone would do if they had an injury—totally revolutionary thinking here folks!
