Ben Chilwell, a left-back for Chelsea who has been on the outside of Enzo Maresca’s team this season, was reportedly turned down by Borussia Dortmund. Chilwell was urged to look for a new club over the summer since he has battled injuries and saw his playing time drastically cut last season.
Sky Germany claims that during the summer transfer window, Dortmund made an approach to Chilwell in an attempt to bolster their left-back position after Tom Rothe left for Union Berlin. But in the end, Dortmund chose to give 18-year-old academy product Almugera Kabar, a highly rated potential within the club, a chance rather than pursue Chilwell.
The Challenges Chilwell Faced at Chelsea
Despite his promise, Chilwell only made 21 appearances for Chelsea in the previous campaign, and his restricted role under Maresca has been exacerbated by injuries and poor play. The search for a new club began when the Italian boss decided not to depend on the England international this season. Dortmund turned down Chilwell because they gave continuity and young development more importance than expanding their left-back alternatives.
