Dusko Ivanovic has been officially appointed as the new head coach of Virtus Segafredo Bologna, following the departure of Luca Banchi. Banchi, who had been with Virtus since September 15, 2023, parted ways with the club after their recent loss to ALBA Berlin in EuroLeague Round 13.
Ivanovic returns to the EuroLeague after a challenging stint with Baskonia during the 2023-24 season. His tenure at Baskonia ended with the team’s failure to qualify for the ACB League playoffs and a 3-0 elimination by Real Madrid in the EuroLeague playoffs. This was Ivanovic’s fourth term with Baskonia, having previously coached the team from 2000 to 2005, 2008 to 2012, and 2019 to 2021.
At Virtus, Ivanovic takes over a team that is currently struggling in the EuroLeague, sitting at the bottom of the standings with just two wins and 11 losses. Despite their difficulties in Europe, Virtus has been performing better in the Italian League (LBA), where they are in third place with seven wins and two losses.
Ivanovic’s experience in the EuroLeague will be crucial as he attempts to turn around Virtus’ fortunes in Europe. The team will be hoping that his leadership and previous success in the EuroLeague can help guide them through this challenging phase and back into competitive form on the continental stage.
