Lille and England midfielder Angel Gomes was sent off as his side lost to Sporting in their opening Champions League match in Lisbon.
Gomes, who made his Three Lions debut earlier this month, was shown a second yellow card for tripping Viktor Gyokeres, moments after the Sweden forward had opened the scoring for the home side.
Gyokeres turned and finished low on 38 minutes before Zeno Debast fired a sensational strike into the top corner to get Sporting’s Champions League campaign off to a winning start.
Gomes, a former Manchester United player, was shown a yellow card after 21 minutes for pushing Francisco Trincao and a second one for the foul on Gyokeres.
The 24-year-old came on as a substitute in the Nations League victory over Ireland on 7 September then earned his first start in the win over Finland three days later.
It means Gomes will miss Lille’s next Champions League match at home to Real Madrid on 2 October.
