Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has tipped Liam Delap, the 21-year-old Ipswich Town striker, to become a significant player for the England national team. Maresca, who coached Delap during his time in Manchester City’s academy, praised the young forward’s talent and work ethic.
Delap’s Premier League Breakthrough
Delap, who joined Ipswich Town in the summer from Manchester City for a deal worth up to £20 million, has impressed in his debut Premier League season, scoring six goals for the Tractor Boys.
“Liam is a fantastic player, especially for his age,” Maresca said. “He’s working hard on and off the ball, understands the game, and scores goals. England has many good strikers, but I think Liam can be an important player for the national team.”
A Prolific Youth Record
Delap, the son of former Premier League midfielder Rory Delap, was a standout performer in City’s academy, scoring 35 goals in 36 games for the Under-21s. He also gained valuable experience during loan spells at Stoke City, Preston North End, and Hull City, before leaving City permanently in pursuit of consistent first-team football.
National Team Aspirations
Although Delap is yet to make his senior debut for England, he has been a regular in the youth setup. He has played 10 times for the England Under-21s, scoring twice, and has represented the nation at every age level.
Ipswich’s Survival Battle
Currently sitting 19th in the Premier League, Ipswich are three points from safety as they prepare to host Chelsea on Monday. Despite their struggles, Delap’s performances have been a bright spot in their campaign, offering hope for both the club’s survival and his future at the national level.
What’s Next for Liam Delap?
With his combination of natural goal-scoring ability and tactical awareness, Delap has the potential to earn his place among England’s next generation of stars. As Ipswich fight for survival, his contributions will be pivotal in the months ahead.
