2023 MLS Champions Visit White House to Celebrate Cup Victory
The Columbus Crew, winners of the 2023 MLS Cup, were honored at the White House this week, celebrating their victory alongside President Joe Biden and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. This marks the second time the Crew have visited the White House to commemorate an MLS Cup triumph, this time under the leadership of head coach Wilfried Nancy in his first season.
The Crew were formally introduced to President Biden before being honored in a reception hosted by Second Gentleman Emhoff. The tradition of U.S. professional and first-division college sports teams being celebrated at the White House is a long-standing one, and this year, Gotham FC became the first NWSL team to be recognized there earlier in the week.
Columbus Crew’s Remarkable 2023 Season
The Crew captured their third MLS Cup in the 2023 season, marking their second title in four years. They tied a franchise record with 57 points over the regular season, solidifying themselves as one of the top teams in the league. Their successful campaign was part of an impressive run to three finals in the past nine months—although they went 1-2 in those showdowns, losing the Champions Cup Final, winning the Leagues Cup, and recently falling in the Campeones Cup on Wednesday.
A Strong Contender for Back-to-Back Titles
Wilfried Nancy’s squad has continued to perform at a high level following their cup-winning season and is considered a favorite to secure another MLS Cup title this year. The Crew are currently third in the Eastern Conference and boast the best defensive record in the league, having conceded only 31 goals. Forward Cucho Hernandez has been crucial to their success and is among the contenders for the MLS MVP, scoring 15 goals and providing eight assists in 23 league appearances.
Columbus is just one point away from surpassing their franchise record for points set last season. The reigning champs have been in fine form, going 4-1-1 since winning the Leagues Cup on August 25.
