Italian Matteo Manassero shot a brilliant nine-under-par third round of 63, taking a three-shot lead into the final day of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in Surrey. Manassero’s round included an eagle and seven birdies, placing him at 18 under par – the lowest 54-hole score to par in tournament history.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy produced a strong round of 66, moving into joint second at 15 under, tied with American Billy Horschel, who shot a 65.

Manassero’s Reaction

“It was one of the best rounds I’ve ever played considering the conditions,” said Manassero, a former winner of the tournament in 2013.

“The front nine was tough with rain, making the course play soft but long. There weren’t many birdie opportunities, but I took advantage of the ones I had. I’ve seen the leaderboard, and I know what’s ahead on Sunday. It won’t be easy, but I’m excited about the challenge.”

McIlroy’s Perspective

McIlroy, who also carded an eagle on the fourth hole, added:

“I played well, my lowest score of the week, with no bogeys. I know I’ll need another low round on Sunday to try to catch Matteo.”

England’s Matt Baldwin sits at 14 under after a round of 71, while Aaron Rai moved to 12 under following his 66.
