England 1966 World Cup Squad Member George Eastham Dies at 88

Eastham played a big part in changing the British transfer system

George Eastham, a key member of England’s legendary 1966 World Cup-winning squad, has passed away at the age of 88. The Blackpool-born forward was an integral part of England’s football history, despite not playing in the iconic final against West Germany.

A Celebrated Career in Football

Eastham earned 19 international caps for England, making his debut in an FA Centenary match against Brazil at Wembley in 1963. Although he was part of Sir Alf Ramsey’s squad for the 1966 World Cup, Eastham did not feature in the matches. Initially, only the starting XI from the final were awarded winners’ medals. However, a subsequent campaign led to Eastham and his fellow squad members receiving medals in 2009, acknowledging their contribution to England’s historic triumph.

Eastham’s final international appearance came in a 2-0 friendly victory over Denmark shortly before the 1966 World Cup.

Legacy Beyond the Pitch

Eastham’s impact on football extended beyond his playing achievements. He was involved in a landmark 1963 court case that reformed the British transfer market, improving players’ rights and freedom to move between clubs. For his services to football, he was awarded an OBE in 1973.

A Club Legend

At the club level, Eastham’s career spanned Newcastle United, Arsenal, and Stoke City. Shortly after the 1966 World Cup, he joined Stoke City for £35,000, where he made 194 appearances and became a pivotal player. His crowning moment came in 1972 when he scored the winning goal in the League Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley, securing Stoke’s first major trophy.

Following his retirement as a player in 1974, Eastham managed Stoke City from March 1977 to January 1978.

Tributes from the Football Community

The Football Association expressed its sadness at Eastham’s passing, stating: “Our condolences go to George’s family and friends.” Stoke City also paid tribute, describing him as a “club legend.” The team plans to honor his memory by wearing black armbands during their match against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and holding a tribute during their home game against Leeds United on 26 December.

“Our thoughts are with George’s family and friends at this difficult time,” the club said.

A Lasting Impact

Eastham’s legacy is one of excellence, both on and off the field. From his role in England’s World Cup triumph to his contributions to player rights and Stoke City’s historic League Cup victory, George Eastham’s influence on football will endure for generations to come.
