According to Inter Miami manager Gerardo Martino, Lionel Messi is still “the best in the world” even though Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid is the clear favorite to win the Ballon d’Or. Martino’s remarks coincide with the expectation that Vinicius will win the coveted prize, which might put an end to Messi and Ronaldo’s reign of supremacy in France.
Martino Is Doubting the Ballon d’Or Criteria
Martino acknowledged that he doesn’t always understand the Ballon d’Or criteria, stating that it’s frequently unclear if the award recognizes the player of the year or the player of the year.
“I’ve never been particularly interested in it. Vinicius Junior probably has the merit [of being the best last season], although if you ask me who is the best right now, it’s Messi.”
Martino’s affection and loyalty for Messi are evident in his comments, which also raises issues about the standards used to choose the best player in the world.
