John Obi Mikel Explains Why Victor Osimhen’s Chelsea Transfer Fell Through
Former Chelsea star John Obi Mikel has shed light on why fellow Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen’s summer transfer to Stamford Bridge fell apart, despite both parties being close to an agreement.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel detailed the complications behind the deal and expressed optimism for a potential January move:
“I know what Victor wanted, I know what the club offered him, and we finally reached a compromise. Both sides had to make concessions, but there were just some minor issues – paperwork, medical, and timing – that we couldn’t get past. We ran out of time. Both Chelsea and Victor really played their part in trying to get the deal done, and I commend Chelsea for their ambition. Victor was very keen to join the club.”
Mikel continued, “He was disappointed it didn’t happen. I spoke to him after the transfer window shut, and we spent 20 minutes talking. I told him, ‘Keep your head down, keep working hard, and keep training. It’s not the best situation right now, but I know you’re strong. Victor has a strong character, much like Didier Drogba and Diego Costa – strikers with that edge and bite who can intimidate defenders. That’s something Chelsea is missing, and Victor definitely has that quality.”
