Mason Greenwood has been called a “mercenary” by Lazio president Claudio Lotito, who took another jab at the former Manchester United forward after the club’s failed bid to sign him.
Last year, Lazio’s attempt to acquire Greenwood from Manchester United failed because the Italian team was unable to compete in the transfer market while other teams fought for the 23-year-old’s services. After a while, Greenwood moved to Marseille of Ligue 1, where he has thrived, making seven league appearances, scoring five goals, and won the team’s Player of the Month title in August.
Lotito’s Latest Comments
In a recent statement, Lotito criticized Greenwood for choosing Marseille over Lazio, dismissing the player as someone the club does not regret missing out on. He said:
“He is absolutely not a regret. Someone who does not accept coming to Lazio cannot be a regret. He is happy at Marseille, he made a choice and that is fine. We do not accept mercenaries; we only want those who choose Lazio. We have had enough mercenaries.”
