Luis Suarez: Uruguay’s Unforgettable Name

Luis Suarez Announces Emotional Retirement from International Football After 17-Year Career

Tuesday marked an emotional day for Uruguayan football as Luis Suarez announced his retirement from international football. After 17 years, 69 goals, and 142 appearances for his country, Suarez bids farewell to a remarkable career with Uruguay.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward, who continues to play for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, will go down as one of Uruguay’s greatest-ever players, having led them to Copa America glory in 2011. Suarez’s illustrious career includes six top-flight titles, a Champions League trophy, and four Copa del Rey wins during his time in Europe, with stints at clubs like Atletico Madrid, Groningen, and Ajax.

Despite his stellar achievements, Suarez’s career was not without controversy. He famously handled the ball to prevent a Ghana victory in the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals, bit three opponents during his career, and served an eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra.

Suarez’s journey from humble beginnings adds to his story. Raised in a large family with little money, his mother, Sandra, once revealed that they couldn’t afford a pair of football boots for him.

Barcelona was always on his mind

Nacional’s former manager, Martin Lasarte, recalled to BBC Sport: “I remember the day Luis told me he was going to play for Barcelona one day and wouldn’t stop until he did it. Back then, Barcelona was like an impossible dream, but he made history by achieving it.”
