Manchester City Eye €60m Move for Martin Zubimendi to Cover Rodri’s Injury

Manchester City are allegedly mulling a €60 million move for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi in the January transfer window as they look to replace the injured Rodri. According to Relevo, Pep Guardiola’s side is aiming to activate Zubimendi’s release clause, since the 25-year-old has yet to sign a new contract with his La Liga club.

Rodri, perhaps City’s most important player, has been sidelined for the season due to injury, creating a big hole in the squad. While Mateo Kovacic and Rico Lewis have served as potential cover possibilities, the club’s hectic schedule may drive them to sign a top-tier defensive midfielder in January.

City are anticipated to take advantage of Zubimendi’s £50.3 million ($65.8 million/€60 million) release clause, which is a reasonable price for a player of his caliber. The Spanish international’s Real Sociedad contract runs until 2027, but his probable availability in January presents an appealing prospect for Guardiola’s team.

Liverpool’s Interest In Zubimendi

Liverpool previously attempted to recruit Zubimendi during the summer transfer window, but the midfielder decided to stay at Anoeta Stadium for another season. He contributed significantly to Spain’s victory in Euro 2024, cementing his position as one of Europe’s best defensive midfielders.

With City trying to retain their domination across many competitions, acquiring Zubimendi might give the needed midfield consistency in Rodri’s absence. This potential move may also hamper Liverpool’s attempts to renew their interest in the player in future transfer windows.
