Northern Ireland’s Winning Streak Ends with 1-0 Nations League Defeat to Bulgaria

Northern Ireland’s Winning Streak Ended

Northern Ireland’s winning streak is over. The club lost 1-0 to Bulgaria in the Nations League match in Plovdiv.

The only goal of the match came in the 40th minute when Kiril Despodov capitalised on a mistake by goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell. Aleksandar Kolev intercepted the loose pass and sent the ball to Despodov. Despodov converted this opportunity into a goal.

Northern Ireland came into the game on the back of a solid win over Luxembourg in their Nations League opener, their fourth win in six games. However, Michael O’Neill’s side struggled to adapt to the difficult pitch conditions and the stifling heat in Plovdiv. Bulgaria even came close to increasing their lead in the first half, hitting the post twice.

Northern Ireland recovered in the second half but failed to score. Northern Ireland dropped to third place in Group C3 after two matches.
