Riot Games has announced a new global ranking system for League of Legends esports, leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS) technology. The Global Power Rankings aims to rank all teams from tier-one League of Legends competitions worldwide, introducing a dynamic and data-driven approach to evaluating teams and their regions.
The rankings will be based on an ELO-like model, referred to by Riot as a blended Elo metric. This formula considers both a team’s individual Elo score (80%) and the strength of the region the team hails from (20%). This blended metric creates a more balanced evaluation by combining team performance and regional strength, ensuring a more accurate reflection of global standings.
Unlike traditional ranking systems, Riot’s new League of Legends ranking will update after every game, rather than at the end of events or tournaments. Every match played in regional splits or international events will impact the standings, providing real-time updates throughout the season. Additionally, the rankings will incorporate a feature called Contextualised Match Weighting (K Factors), which will weigh international events and knockout matches more heavily than regional or group-stage matches.
Riot Games has also designed the system to predict match outcomes, and testing has shown a strong correlation between expected and actual results. The system will evaluate both League Elo (based on the past three years) and Team Elo (based on two years), ensuring the rankings account for roster changes and international performance over time.
Although there is no official roadmap for further developments, Riot has already begun exploring additional features, such as incorporating in-game stats, player-based power rankings, and refining K-factors for even greater accuracy.
The Global Power Rankings will face their first major test during the 2024 League of Legends World Championship, where they will be updated in real-time after each day of play.
