Tottenham Edge Past Coventry City with Dramatic Late Comeback in Carabao Cup

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has cautioned fans that “there is no quick fix” despite their thrilling late victory over Coventry City in the Carabao Cup third round. Brennan Johnson’s 93rd-minute winner secured a 2-1 comeback, saving Spurs from what could have been an embarrassing exit against the Championship side.

Tottenham’s Dramatic Late Win Against Coventry City

In a game where Tottenham struggled for much of the match, Coventry City took a deserved lead through Brandon Thomas-Asante in the 63rd minute, finishing off a low cross from Norman Bassette. Spurs found it difficult to break down Coventry’s defense for large parts of the game and seemed headed for a third consecutive defeat.

However, the Premier League side found some late magic. Djed Spence equalised in the 88th minute after being set up by Dejan Kulusevski, and Brennan Johnson completed the turnaround in stoppage time with a composed finish following a perfect through-ball from Rodrigo Bentancur.

Ange Postecoglou’s Warning: No Quick Fix for Tottenham

Despite the victory, Postecoglou was quick to remind fans and players alike that the team still has much work to do. “We had to just hang in there somehow and we did,” Postecoglou told Sky Sports after the game. “We weren’t fluent or cohesive. I’ve consistently said there is no easy or quick fix to where we want to get to and one result doesn’t change that.”

Victory over Coventry City ended Spurs’ two-match losing streak and secured their place in the Carabao Cup last 16. However, Postecoglou emphasized the need for improvement, especially after their recent derby loss to Arsenal.

Coventry City Push Spurs to the Limit

For much of the game, Coventry were the better side. Before Thomas-Asante’s opener, Coventry came close to scoring when Haji Wright had a shot cleared off the line by Ben Davies after goalkeeper Fraser Forster misjudged a long ball forward. Even after taking the lead, Coventry had chances to extend their advantage, with Ellis Simms heading wide and Ephron Mason-Clark nearly converting a Simms pass across the goal.

Coventry keeper Ben Wilson made a crucial save to deny Ben Davies at 0-0, but he was unable to stop Spence and Johnson’s late goals that sealed Tottenham’s comeback. Despite the defeat, Coventry City will reflect on their close call against a Premier League giant, adding to their history of cup upsets.

Postecoglou Looks for Momentum

The result keeps Tottenham’s hopes of silverware alive in the 2024/25 season, a year in which manager Ange Postecoglou has faced some criticism after stating he “always” wins trophies in his second season at a club. Tottenham will hope that this result can provide a much-needed boost as they aim to improve their performance and fight for success in both domestic and European competitions.
