After Panathinaikos’ friendly match against Galatasaray, Head Coach Ergin Ataman made a gesture showing the score of 3-1, which was the result of the Fenerbahçe derby. Fenerbahçe responded to this gesture. General Secretary Burak Kızılhan’s statement on the matter was as follows:

“Regarding the divisive and disgraceful gesture of that individual, whose name I do not even want to mention, a gesture that does not suit the identity of a national team coach—we have held discussions internally. We have spoken with the relevant parties. Let our community rest assured.

We will take the necessary actions and make an announcement very soon.”

Following the incident, Ergin Ataman shared a message apologizing to the Fenerbahce community.

“I am a coach who has always expressed the respect I have for the Fenerbahce community at every opportunity, while also emphasizing that I am one of their biggest rivals on the court. I am aware of the discomfort my gesture caused within the Fenerbahçe community. I sincerely regret the unintended perception that was created, which I did not desire in any way. I would like to express my genuine apologies to the entire Fenerbahce community for the incident and for any offense I may have caused.”
