Four Premier League Clubs to Demand Compensation if Man City Found Guilty

According to reports, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur—four of Manchester City’s Premier League rivals—have started arbitration proceedings to protect their claim to damages in the event that City is found guilty of 115 alleged violations of the financial fair play (FFP) regulations. The purpose of this action is to protect their right to compensation until the independent regulatory panel renders its decision, which is anticipated to happen next year.

According to legal advice, the clubs might be impacted by a six-year statute of limitations on bringing claims, with the possible deadline coincident with Der Spiegel’s 2018 Football Leaks publication that described alleged financial malfeasance at City. These teams could demand hundreds of millions of pounds in damages for missed chances to win titles, qualify for the Champions League, and other financial losses if City is found guilty.

Chelsea Refuses to Participate Because of Self-Reported FFP Issues

However, because of their own ongoing FFP probe, Chelsea has decided not to pursue a claim. Todd Boehly and the Clearlake consortium, Chelsea’s new owners, disclosed some payments to the Premier League and UEFA, which sparked this investigation, which covers payments made between 2012 and 2019 under former owner Roman Abramovich. Due to the investigation’s recent appearance in 2023, Chelsea or other teams now have until 2029 to submit associated compensation claims.
