Adrian Newey Wanted to Work with Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, But Had to Choose One – Aston Martin Move Explained
Adrian Newey, the legendary Formula 1 designer, revealed that he was keen to work with both Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso but ultimately had to make a decision between the two.
Newey considered working alongside Hamilton at Ferrari before opting to join Alonso and Aston Martin. After officially parting ways with Red Bull, Newey was linked to several teams, including Ferrari, where Hamilton had recently signed. However, it was Aston Martin’s “old model owner” Lawrence Stroll who convinced Newey to become the managing technical partner of the Silverstone-based team.
“Once after a couple of months I decided I would like to stay in Formula 1, Ferrari was one of the considerations. I’ve made no secret of the fact I wanted to work with Fernando and I wanted to work with Lewis. And since they’re in different teams, I couldn’t fulfil both.”
“But I think for various reasons, particularly Lawrence’s offer of shareholding and partnership and his commitment and the fact that he is the only one of that old model of team owners, where you have an active owner like Frank Williams. That was the model 20 years ago. Lawrence is the only one of that model now.”
