Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has challenged his team-mates to focus on building their own legacy as they pursue the Premier League title in their first season under manager Arne Slot.
Liverpool sit comfortably at the top of the table, six points clear of second-placed Arsenal, with a game in hand.
A New Era for Liverpool
Reflecting on Liverpool’s historic 2019-20 title-winning season under former manager Jurgen Klopp, Alisson said:
“That team was really special. We achieved great things, including the first Premier League title in a long, long time and the Champions League before that.”
However, the Brazilian goalkeeper emphasized the need to focus on the present:
“There is no comparison with both situations. This group of players has the quality to do something special. The commitment needed to win something is there.”
Building a New Team
While nine players from Liverpool’s 2019-20 squad remain key contributors this season, the club has seen significant changes:
- Key Returnees: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Andrew Robertson, Mohamed Salah, and Curtis Jones.
- New Additions: Midfielders Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis Mac Allister, as well as attacking talents Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo.
Under Arne Slot, who joined from Feyenoord in the summer, Liverpool have adopted a more possession-based style, differing from Klopp’s intense, transition-heavy approach.
Alisson noted the tactical shift:
“It’s not too similar to our style under Klopp. A few players still play, but we now have more ball possession. Before, it was really straightforward, with a lot of transitions and intensity.”
Aiming to Avoid Past Mistakes
Liverpool famously lost a 10-point lead to Manchester City in the 2018-19 season before securing the title the following year. Slot’s team is determined not to repeat that history.
Ahead of Sunday’s match against West Ham, Alisson emphasized:
“We don’t have to compare ourselves with teams from the past. We have to create our own history this season, this group.”
