Unwanted Record for Celtic Following Champions League Drubbing

Following a terrible 7-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League, Celtic was inundated on social media with criticism and ridicule. Apart from breaking the Scottish side’s perfect run, the crushing loss made an unwelcome milestone as the first British team to give up five goals in the first half of a European competition match since Cwmbran Town in the 1997-98 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

The Match: A Crushing Collapse and a Short Spark of Hope

Following Emre Can’s early penalty, the game seemed temporarily promising for Celtic before Daizen Maeda equalized. The hope was fleeting, though, as Dortmund went on a scoring frenzy and Karim Adeyemi scored a hat-trick to give the Bundesliga team a 5-1 lead at halftime. Serhou Guirassy also converted another penalty.

The second half simply made Celtic’s suffering worse since more goals from Guirassy and Felix Nmecha finished off a 7-1 destruction. Liam Scales’s heroic last-minute defense and key saves from Kasper Schmeichel stopped an even worse scoreline, therefore preserving Celtic from matching their worst-ever European loss.

Constant Struggles of Celtic in Germany

With never a winning in 14 visits, the loss marks Celtic’s terrible record in Germany. For Brendan Rodgers’ team, the loss was a significant setback since it will try to bounce back from an embarrassment that not only affected their confidence but also attracted close examination from both journalists and supporters.
