Crystal Palace Manager Oliver Glasner on High Expectations: “They Were Wrong”

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has addressed the high expectations surrounding the team after their strong finish to the 2023-24 season. Palace won six of their last seven games, scoring 21 goals, and finished with 49 points – their best tally in a 38-game Premier League season.

However, the current season has not started as well. Palace has secured only two wins, both in the Carabao Cup against Championship teams Norwich and QPR, and they currently sit on just two points from four games in the Premier League.

Glasner’s First Full Season in Charge

This is Oliver Glasner‘s first full season as manager, having taken over in February. Reflecting on the team’s form ahead of their home match against Manchester United, the Austrian said, “The last seven games were great, but the first 31 weren’t – it doesn’t mean it continues like the last seven.”

Managing Expectations

Glasner emphasized that the strong finish to last season raised unrealistic expectations for the current campaign:

“The expectations were wrong because when you win two, it doesn’t mean you win the next one, and when you lose two, it doesn’t mean you lose the next one.”

He also reminded fans of the bigger picture, stating:

“After 31 rounds, we were five points away from relegation. That is fact. We didn’t expect to win every game and qualify for the Champions League. When your highest point total is 49, you can’t expect to suddenly get 78.”
