Jack Draper Withdraws from Japan Open Quarter-finals Due to Injury
British number one Jack Draper was forced to retire from the Japan Open quarter-finals after suffering an injury. The 23-year-old, ranked 20th in the world, lost the first set 7-5 and was trailing 2-1 in the second set against France’s Ugo Humbert when he called for a medical timeout due to abdominal pain.
Despite attempting to continue, Draper ultimately retired from the match, allowing Humbert to advance. Humbert will now face Tomas Machac from the Czech Republic in the semi-finals for a chance to secure a spot in the final.
This injury setback follows Draper’s impressive run at the US Open, where he reached his first Grand Slam semi-final, losing to world number one Jannik Sinner in straight sets. Draper notably vomited three times during the match and has previously mentioned experiencing physical symptoms due to “psychological stress,” such as during his first-round victory at the Australian Open earlier this year.
