Harry Kane Defended from ‘Out of Order’ Criticism

There was a lot of sharp criticism of Harry Kane in Germany after his quiet game for Bayern Munich against Aston Villa, but Martin Keown, a former Arsenal player, stepped up to support the England captain.

Just look at Kane’s stats: 54 goals in 53 games since joining Bayern. The German media quickly criticized the scorer after he played against Bayer Leverkusen last week and didn’t score in a 1-1 draw. They also didn’t score against Villa this week in a 1-0 loss. Bild, one of Germany’s biggest newspapers, criticized Kane for his poor performance against Leverkusen. His limited role against Villa (only two late shots) didn’t help the critics either.

When Keown heard about the criticism of Kane on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan Show, he said it was “out of order.” “I think the German media are having a great time criticizing him after all he’s done for Bayern since he’s been there,” he said. He’s not the reason they lost the Bundesliga last year. He’s been wonderful.”

Keown then said nice things about Kane:

“He could have tied the game against Villa right at the end, but Emi Martinez made a great save. I think it’s silly. If he were German, everyone would praise him, and we’d talk about him for years. But in Germany, they want to say bad things about him for some reason. It doesn’t make sense. Someone who scores 54 goals in 53 games is not not doing it.”

Even though the media is always looking at Kane, his numbers and past games show how important he is to Bayern’s attack, and Keown’s defense shows how quickly the media can turn its attention away from even the best players.
