Mircea Lucescu Set to Lead Romania Again After Gheorghe Hagi Declines Offer

After Gheorghe Hagi Declines, Romania Set for Second Mircea Lucescu Era

Gheorghe Hagi declined the offer to take the head coach position, turning Romania’s attention to Mircea Lucescu. The official announcement is imminent.

What Happened?

Romania advanced to the Round of 16 in EURO 2024 by collecting 4 points in their group but was eliminated after a 3-0 defeat to the Netherlands. Following this, the Romanian Football Federation parted ways with head coach Edward Iordanescu. Mircea Lucescu is now poised to take over Iordanescu’s position.

The Bigger Picture

According to Daniel Nanu’s report, Gheorghe Hagi was the first choice for the head coach position in Romania. However, the country’s football legend declined the offer. Consequently, the Romanian Football Federation turned its focus to Mircea Lucescu, and the 79-year-old coach is expected to be announced tomorrow.

If Mircea Lucescu takes over the Romanian national team, it will be his second term in this role. The experienced coach previously led Romania from 1981 to 1986.

Most recently managing Dinamo Kiev, Mircea Lucescu has not taken on any coaching role since leaving the Ukrainian capital in November 2023.
