Omar Alderete Apologizes to Lionel Messi for ‘Disrespectful’ Incident in World Cup Qualifier
Following a heated World Cup qualifying match between Argentina and Paraguay in which the Argentine star was hit by a bottle thrown from the stands, Paraguay defender Omar Alderete has publicly apologized to Lionel Messi.
Argentina was shocked to lose 2-1 in the intense match at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco. Argentina took an early lead with to Lautaro Martinez, but Paraguay won thanks to goals from Antonio Sanabria and Alderete. As a result of the heated atmosphere, Messi publicly criticized the officiating, calling it “cowardly.” The bottle-throwing incident directed at Messi further soured the game.
Alderete’s Apology
Alderete took to Instagram to personally apologize to Messi, expressing his regret over the incident:
“Dear Leo Messi, I want to apologize on behalf of my country for the unfortunate incident in which someone threw a bottle at you. You are an idol for millions here and around the world (especially for Fede). We deeply regret this disrespectful act that does not represent the affection and admiration we feel for you.”
