Rangers Progress to Scottish League Cup Semi-Finals with Cyriel Dessers Double

Rangers advanced to the Scottish League Cup semi-finals with a comfortable win over Dundee, thanks to a Cyriel Dessers double. Rangers returned to Ibrox and were rewarded for early pressure when Trevor Carson saved a shot from Nedim Bajrami, only for Dessers to score from the rebound. The victory sets Rangers on course to defend their trophy as they join Aberdeen and Motherwell in the final four.

Dundee showed resilience, but Jack Butland‘s brilliant save foiled Oluwaseun Adewumi, keeping them at bay. Carson continued to deny Dessers and others, but a second-half penalty, converted by James Tavernier, sealed the victory. Dessers added a third in stoppage time to secure Rangers’ spot at Hampden Park.

Rangers’ Route to Hampden

Rangers started strongly, with Dessers’ opener suggesting a comfortable win, but missed chances kept Dundee in the game during the first half. Tavernier’s early second-half penalty gave Rangers a two-goal cushion, allowing them to play with more freedom. Despite missed opportunities to extend the lead, Rangers deservedly progress and will now shift focus to their Europa League fixture against Malmo on Thursday.

Dundee’s Performance

Dundee, aiming for their first cup semi-final in 18 years, showed encouraging signs despite the loss. Tony Docherty’s side remained competitive, especially after Dessers’ early goal, and created several chances, but Carson’s penalty concession made a comeback unlikely. Dundee will take positives from their performance into their Premiership campaign.

What the Managers Said

Rangers manager Philippe Clement: “It’s been a really crazy period, feeling like you’re only playing away games. [Nedim Bajrami] has only been with us for a week, but he’s someone we’ve been following, and I’m happy with the signings. We see improvements week by week.”

Dundee manager Tony Docherty: “I’m disappointed in the goals we conceded. We created good opportunities, especially in the second half. It’s a learning curve for our young players, and we’ll build from this.”
